It ain't not monogamy. But it’s not cheating or polygamy, either. It’s called polyamory, and with hundreds practicing the lifestyle in and around Boston.....

Jay Sekora isn’t actively looking for an additional relationship, but he admits to occasionally checking a dating site to see who’s out there. Sekora’s girlfriend, Mare, who does not want her last name used here for professional reasons, said she is not pursuing anyone, either, but is “open and welcoming to what might come along.” In the three-plus years they have been together, a few other people have come along, like the woman whom Sekora, a 43-year-old systems administrator from Quincy, met online and dated briefly until she moved away. There was also a male-male couple that Mare and Sekora, who identifies as bisexual, dated for several months as a couple. Other than that, it has been the two of them. Well, sort of.

Through the lens of monogamy, this love connection may appear distorted, but that’s not how Sekora and Mare, who is 45, describe their lifestyle. Adherents call it responsible non-monogamy or polyamory, and the nontraditional practice is creeping out of the closet, making gay marriage feel somewhat last decade here in Massachusetts. What literally translates to “loving many,” polyamory (or poly, for short), a term coined around 1990, refers to consensual, romantic love with more than one person. Framing it in broad terms, Sekora, one of the three founders and acting administrator of the 500-person-strong group Poly Boston, says: “There’s monogamy where two people are exclusive. There’s cheating in which people are lying about being exclusive. And poly is everything else.”

Everything else with guidelines, that is, although those vary according to the agreed-upon needs and desires of the people in the relationships. After all, this isn’t swinging, in which a couple seeks out recreational sex. This isn’t even the free love of the ’60s and ’70s, characterized by psychedelic love-ins. And despite the shared “poly” prefix, this certainly isn’t the patriarchal, man-with-many-wives polygamy that has earned increased public attention with the HBO show Big Love. Polyamory has a decidedly feminist, free-spirited flavor, and these are real relationships with the full array of benefits and complexities -- plus a few more -- as the members of Poly Boston’s hypercommunicative, often erudite, and well-entwined community will explain.

“With affairs, you get sex. With polyamory, you get breakfast,” says Cambridge sex therapist Gina Ogden, citing a well-known poly saying. Ogden is the author of The Return of Desire, in which she dedicates a chapter to affairs and polyamory. “Polyamory isn’t a lifestyle for everybody, any more than monogamy is for everybody,” she says. “Keeping one relationship vital is a lot of work, and if you start adding more relationships, it becomes more work.” Though common descriptors used for monogamy don’t easily apply to polyamory, there is a recognizable spectrum of how open these partnerships may be. On the closed end, you might have a couple in a primary relationship who will then have one or more secondary relationships that are structured to accommodate the primary one. There’s also polyfidelity, in which three or more people are exclusive with one another. On the open end, there might be chains of people where, for example, Sue is dating Bill and Bill is dating Karen and Karen is dating Jack, who is also dating Sue.

“The conventional paradigm of monogamy is very much entrenched in our culture,” says Randi Kaufman, a clinical psychologist who has counseled nearly 40 poly people in her Cambridge office. “Practicing polyamory means setting aside the basic principle of monogamy that one person will meet all of another’s needs in an intimate relationship.” Though Kaufman has seen polyamory work well, she also has counseled clients on some poly-specific challenges, such as “new relationship energy,” referring to an intensified focus on a new person that can cause someone to neglect his or her other partners while in the throes of new love. Just as in monogamous relationships, sex can drop off in poly relationships, too, says Kaufman, but poly people can still get their sexual needs met by others without damaging their primary relationships. Then there’s the issue of jealousy.

“A lot of poly people who feel jealous say it’s a warning sign that your needs aren’t getting met,” says Sekora. He says he’s felt insecure about relationships but not necessarily jealous of his partner’s partners. He recalls a time early in his relationship with Mare, however, when she felt threatened by a woman he had started dating. When the three sat down and talked, the women got along well and Mare’s worries dissipated. “Sensible, mature, self-reliant, and stable partners would be a welcome asset” to their relationship, says Mare, who began to identify as poly five years ago when she tapped into the Poly Boston community. Even though she grew up in a more sexually permissive era than her mother did, Mare remembers being in high school and college in the 1980s and envying her mother’s 1950s young adulthood when people dated around. For Mare, who likes the thought of having deep, enduring love with Sekora -- and the possibility of more first kisses with other people -- a polyamorous lifestyle is the answer.

For the simple reason that she is an under age minor. We`ve had the whole discussions about gross prevs and just what their capable of. (Like Nicolas) We`ve discussed the safety of using the intrernet. I keep close tabs on my children. However since then I have built my self esteem up and have been doing an Awesome job taking care of my children.Working with Social Services,counsellors , in take workers coming to my home and working with us in our home. No. 1 to argue that the vague wording of s. 293 (“Every one who...agrees...to...enter into...any kind of conjugal union with more than one person at the same time”) infringes their right to liberty under s. 7 of the Charter. They might also turn to the Canadian Supreme Court’s formal equality jurisprudence in R. v. Hess; R. v. Nguyen, [1990] S.C.J. No. 91 to claim infringement of their sex equality rights under s. 15(1) of the Charter because prosecutors never charge women with this crime.

The real contest will occur at the s. 1 justification stage. Attorney General Oppal will argue that prohibiting polygamy protects women from sexual exploitation. Apparently, the Harper government will also defend s. 293, raising “Canadian values” as the basis for derogating from the protection of Charter rights. Redolent of “family values,” Canadian values include protecting women’s gender equality and the rule of law.

Protecting women is a hard sell under the Oakes test that courts use to justify limiting rights under s. 1 (R. v. Oakes, [1986] 1 S.C.R. 103 requires a measure that limits rights to serve a pressing and substantial objective, as well as to meet the three prongs of a proportionality test — rational connection, minimal impairment and proportionality). When the polygamy prohibition was included in the first comprehensive Criminal Code in 1893, it was animated by the desire to protect the Christian definition of marriage while discouraging Mormon and ex-Mormon immigration. Although the explicit reference to Mormonism was dropped in 1954, the prohibition retained its original consistency with Christianity. Protecting women would constitute a “shifting purpose” contrary to R. v. Big M Drug Mart Ltd., [1985] S.C.J. No. 17.

The connection between prohibiting polygamy and protecting women is over-inclusive because, as a study by McGill law professor Angela Campbell revealed, not all polygamous relationships subordinate women. The connection is also under-inclusive given the host of circumstances where monogamous women’s choices may be suspect as subject to coercion yet we do not even question, let alone invoke the criminal law (for example, remaining at home and raising children rather than entering the workforce, undergoing plastic surgery or marrying someone from the same religious community). In addition, monogamous wives living in isolation behind the closed doors of single family dwellings may face domestic violence and even death at the hands of individual husbands who are psychotic or socialized to believe they are superior beings.

The prohibition on polygamy is likely to fail the minimal impairment test because it is absolute, whereas the same objectives could be achieved by a partial prohibition, namely the existing policy against legalization. In addition, the polygamy prohibition carries a penalty of up to five years incarceration, which is a harsh sentence not just for Bountiful residents but more importantly for immigrants from countries where polygamy is legal. A policy of refusing to legalize polygamy is less harsh and also more respectful of the people for whom Canada’s multiculturalism policy was designed.

In fact, Canada already has an anti-legalization policy in place in the new Civil Marriage Act, S.C. 2005, c. 33, s. 2. This legislation is sufficient to sustain Canada’s compliance with the anti-polygamy recommendation of the international Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Criminalization is overkill, as recognized by the Law Reform Commission of Canada in 1985 when it recommended that polygamy be decriminalized.

The final prong of the Oakes test requires a court to balance the deleterious and salutary effects of the polygamy prohibition. Assuming the balancing is between religious freedom and the protection of women, did the Supreme Court of Canada forever resolve this contest in Bruker v. Marcovitz [2007] S.C.J. No. 54 by favouring the latter?

Whatever the answer, it does not obviate the more fundamental issue: Does Canada need to protect women from polygamy? If Oppal calls women as witnesses, will they be the ex-wives who have played the exit card and can no longer provide first-hand information? Can current “wives” even be called given they may be protected under spousal privilege evidentiary rules, especially if polygamous “marriages” are recognized under the rules of private international law? And what about women who are not from Bountiful, women whose experiences of polygamy derive from Islamic religious beliefs or from African customary religious traditions — will their evidence be called?

The constitutional challenge of polygamy is to hear the voices of the religious women who experience it, to empathize with their accounts and above all not to stereotype them. tell someone at school who will help you get here or at least away from there. Don't give up trying to get away that was couragous and we are proud of you for running. You just have to run to social services instead. Don't be afraid of foster care, tell them you have a married aunt with three kids in bc who will take you in in a breath, and if they downplay your complaints, they are the wrong ones to talk to. wait paitiently, and find another counseller on another day who will support you. I can tell the people who you are talking to are not supportive. I have learned that you cant expect support the first time around or from the first person who learns of what you can prove Sam, you have to find a worker who will listen. If you call us we will help. Dont bother telling people who discourage how you feel. Keep trying and you will find the ones who will encourage you TO GET OUT OF THE SITUATION NOW.

i Really TRY not to hate, but it comes naturally after living with a stepfather for sixteen plus years.It damn near killed me. You'd be better off to be an orphan, really, than to live in some jerk's house just because he wants to bed your mother. OK so I woke up this morning to unexplained chest congestion and shortness of breath... And frig the back muscles spasms JC. Those cramps are just as bad as the stomach aches, just different; the spasms are achier and dull when in the back and sharp and knotty when in the front. Also my toes have joined the finger club, not presenting Raynaud's hella thankful but the toes are beginning to hurt all the time like the fingers, hands, and wrists do. I'm coughing up sputum yum not. The COPD had been in remission; I had chronic bronchial problems my first year of Uvic yet the Asthma test came back negative. I was given inhalers anyhow, a corticosteroid and a bronchial dilator, the BD one served me well for the tunnel vision, but the breathing problems went away altogether when I dropped out of school. More than a year later, though, after working too hard too long too much I developed the chronic bronchitis again. And when I went on medical leave, the coughing and sputum went away again. Is it funny how the bronchial trouble keeps spontaneously coming out of remission the same time as the stomach cramps? The only new symptom is the Raynaud hands. The rest is old hat, just getting much worse now. Oy vey.

Alright so this is my first blog. No, Let's call it a blo(b); I'd be invariably more comfortable then and you the reader then will assume some responsibility for forgiving my laziness and propensity to publish without proofing, misspell, and the like. That little b after the o being there instead of the g is a disclaimer. This is not a blog then, so let's blob. Tonight I noticed for the first time that when I eat, it induces Raynaud's in first my right hand middle finger -- first numbness -- then neat changeling patterns of white patchiness that come and go in white leaf shaped patterns all over my fingers, as soon as I feel the food hit my stomach. The shifting white leaf patterns are very different from the 'normal' white to green left index finger that looks like I should be wearing a dental elastic at the second joint of that finger, and feels intensely achy, as if it has been lest temporarily severed. Weird. So I get fingertip numbness the moment I eat; later, knotty cramps for hours, again, after eating, corresponding with the 'finger-band' type Raynaud's that seems to happen repeatedly when I am upset. Today hurt. My stomach is so sore, but my 80 hour migraine has lifted hurray! Today I tried and failed miserably to impart to my general physician what symptoms I am suffering from. There are too many. Yet each differing symptom - the Raynaud's, the cramps after eating, the photosensitive and sound sensitive migraines, the ocular pain and sudden sensitivity to light, the vision blurriness, static whiteout and tunnel vision, the night sweats, the night terrors, the aching hands and arms, the hypertension in the chest and the angina type pain, the stabbing pain in the right ear, the short term memory problems and cognitive dysfunction, the sleepiness and falling instantly asleep when inappropriate- are all congruent. These are all symptoms that can occur resultant of vasospastic dis-orders. OK so I am a spaz, after all. All these symptoms: to many for me to recall cohesively while under the duress of an appointment, too many to put to mind even right now, as I Blo(b) this out. And on top of it the symptoms are changing daily. WTH! So my severe stomach cramps(esophageal) are back with a vengeance after being in remission for several years. The last time I gritted through this type of agony was 2003, after being a good little psychiatric patient and taking the SSRI dosage that a sports doc assured me was an irresponsible dosage to have me on, 400 mg of Zoloft daily. Began the night parade of profuse sweating during sleep, terrible stomach cramps, and waking up yelling in a start, however confused about why I had just yelled at all, let alone why had I just jumped out sleep so violently and drenched in sweat. Asthma tests - negative. Seemingly there were no reasons I should be in chronic bronchial distress mimicking atypical asthma. Why would I suspect SSRI related prinzmetal angina might be causing the 80 hour photosensitive migraines and all the unexplained cyclical vomiting? Well, I didn't and neither did or now for that matter do any of my docs, bless 'm for tryin'. I am a horrible patient, I know that. I couldn't explain rock paper scissors with my mouth if my life depended on it, I need to write to think and to think I need to write. Yea, I could've said and the reverse instead, but that would have been jumpin' on the ol' self censor ship so I won't go there. So two doctors in two days ruled out prinzmetal angina without testing for it. I hate that. Since prinametal angina only occurs while asleep, it is difficult to document it. One would have to suffer an attack or vasospasm, which happens while one sleeps, while an ECG or is it EKG or angiogram is done. I'm exhausted and its 1:25 a.m. My esophagus is buzzing and it feels like I am flexing my six pack, perhaps for a photo op, clench. The doc said I lost twenty pounds since he last saw me, but it has been awhile... If I hadn't turned whitefinger - Raynaud's causes my fingers to turn white, and green, and red and blue and hopefully not black. Black is bad where Raynauds is present, bad indeed-- I wouldn't 've caught coon-trail of the potential for nightime angina attacks while asleep, and I'd have never known why I jump out of sleep and shout or strike out sometimes, nor why I fell asleep on Sunday night only to wake but a moment later feeling unable to breath with my heart pounding out of my chest unable to draw full breath and panting like an arrow struck moose dripping in pints of perspiration. Note to self: Get tested for prinzmetal angina please. You forgot to tell the doctor that your mother was abated for vasospasm, your mother's husband's son has severe carpal tunnel syndrome as well as complained of prinzmetal angina at least five years ago but has not been treated or diagnosed, or that your grandmother is diagnosed as paralyzed from apparent ataxia. Try again. Do better.
